Acupuncture, acupressure, Auricular therapy/ear acupressure, Traditional Chinese food therapy and lifestyle advice. Moxibustion heat therapy, cupping.
Traditional treatment method where suction cups are applied to affected areas.
Tight tissues are invigorated, muscle tension relieved, cups reduce stagnation by promoting blood and qi circulation in a target area.
Commonly used to treat aches and pain in joints and back, and along the sciatic nerve pathway,
cups can also be used to expel chesty coughs, colds and flu and to relieve stress and anxiety.
I use glass cups where a small flame is quickly inserted and withdrawn to create a partial vacuum then the cup is safely placed on the body. You might feel mild pressure as skin and muscle is drawn into the cup.
You should know that light visible marks may be left on the body, which will disappear but may take a few days.
These marks are an external sign of some stagnation in your body which is being released. Cupping is increasingly popular and we often find people requesting it, though it’s not suitable in all cases.
Please inform your practitioner if you may be pregnant.
Chinese Food Therapy.
Using my understanding of Chinese food therapy I can guide you on which foods will and won’t suit you and your health condition.
This will give you better health and improve your whole quality of life and mood. We teach the value of accumulating healing benefits from daily actions just using healthy everyday foods the right way for you, using foods you are used to, you don’t have to eat Asian every night!
Beyond a list of chemicals, each food has an energetic nature, its own essence and action,
which has specific effects on the body’s organs, it may be helping or even hindering your balance.
For example, a person with chronic lung illness and a lot of phlegm will benefit from cutting down on greasy,
fried foods and foods that are hard to digest, even very cold foods that will slow the burn up of fluids.
Sometimes we need to be reminded of when and how much to eat, and how we prepare it is very important. I’m finding more and more interest in this and people really getting results when they follow these few changes in a modern diet using safe everyday foods.
Lifestyle advice
This simply means guidance on your regular habits, identifying the dos and don’ts some of which you may be aware of but need highlighting and attention.
Take the above example of lung problems, like coughs with damp phlegm in the chest.
Good advice would be to cover up against the wind and avoid dampness where possible. Look after yourself when you catch a cold, and make sure to rest. Try to avoid the chest by crouching over a desk.
And of course, emotional awareness helps. In this case, avoid excess worry and for some people anger.
AURICULAR THERAPY OR EAR ACUPRESSURE is the stimulation of specific points on the ear, which is believed to be a miniature map or Microsystem of the body.
The outer ear is rich in cranial nerves that direct messages to the brain, and there are tiny points in the ear which relate to every part of the body from head to toe.
These can influence your body emotionally and physically, to calm down during a stressful period or home in on a physical issue.
I use pain-free natural Vaccaria seeds secured on the ear surface using a small piece of adhesive tape.
These are placed on specific acupressure points which correspond to the body part causing your problem.
They don’t puncture the skin so are safe to leave on for 3 to 5 days.
They activate the area by exerting a continuous mild pressure which you can strengthen by gently pressing, thus prolonging your treatment.
Auricular therapy is very well researched especially for the treatment of:
An ancient therapy again increasing in popularity.
Thin single-use acupuncture needles are used to access points at the surface of the body which connect directly with the qi which travels in channels or currents through your body and connects with the vital organs inside. Qi is the energy produced by the interaction of natural mechanisms, it warms, circulates and spreads nourishment through your body and each organ.
We insert thin stainless steel disposable needles to unblock or regulate qi in these points- bringing more energy where needed or moving stagnated areas.
A well-trained acupuncturist will notice symptoms and signs showing on the outside of the body that help diagnose what’s going on inside the inside of the body like the complexion colour and movements of clients.
And also time honoured techniques such as examining the tongue colour and texture and the rate and feel of the pulse at the wrist.
Shorter-term external problems can respond quite fast, complex problems can take more time to readjust.
Acupuncture helps reactivate the natural self-healing ability you were born with.
Another ancient therapy (the earliest record of its medical use dates back to 581bc), growing in popularity today.
The method I use involves gentle heat applied to the body by using a roll of dried mugwort or Artemisia herb, which is lit and held at a safe distance from the area.
This produces heat with a more penetrating and drying effect, very useful in reducing cold and dampness in the body, so it is effective in joint muscle pain and arthritis.
Artemisia contains an active component Borneol which has a pain relieving or analgesic effect.
“Moxa” therapy is commonly used for:
Generally, moxibustion revitalises the flow of energy, blood and fluids, relaxes and reduces pain, enhances immunity and is extremely useful for treating and PREVENTING pain and disease
Modern acupuncturists also use heat lamps to warm larger areas for the above disease types.
In the journal ‘Current Opinion in Anesthesiology’
a paper titled ‘Acupuncture for chronic pain; an update and critical overview’, concluded that :
“Mounting evidence supports the effects of acupuncture to treat chronic low back, shoulder, neck and knee pain as well as headaches” cite: Yin et al)
Chinese medicine views pain as a condition where the moving energy process of the body (Qi) has become blocked or deficient or both. This can help with:
What’s very valuable and useful is the TCM idea of patterns and organ relationships here which gives us a unique insight and guides us in how to diagnose and treat pain in particular areas. There are always signs on the outside to give us a clue about what’s happening inside.
For example, neck pain is seen as often related to the liver and back pain with the kidney.
So as well as doing points in the local area we will do points further away which strengthen the function of the related organ.

Chinese Medicine has long had an understanding of gynaecology and women’s physiology. I work with women to improve their cycle and comfort at all the different stages in their lives to menopause and beyond.
Studies have shown that acupuncture has a positive effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis which keeps the reproductive organs in balance.
Acupuncture will help you on your path to fertility whether it is assisted – A.R.T / I.V.F or without.
We can identify the blockages and strengthen your body to give you the best chance at conception and see you through your pregnancy, birth and aftercare.
Also, the treatments will calm you during this process and help give you the stamina you will need for your new role as parents.
I can tailor a program for each individual or couple including diet, relaxation and lifestyle advice that will help support you emotionally and physically.
